Learn some of the tips included in this article so you can make a garden that everyone can enjoy. You can figure out everything you need, so you do not waste money on unnecessary equipment, or the wrong types of seeds for your environment.

Clay soil can be very hard to work with, and you will often find that it sticks to the shovel. Take the hard work out of using a shovel in clay soil by rubbing a light coat of car or floor wax over the surface with a clean cloth and buff the surface. You will be able to work with the clay more easily, and it will not stick to your shovel.

Transform the handles of your tools into convenient measuring devices. Tools with long handles, such as shovels, hoes and rakes can be made into measuring sticks. On the floor, simply lay out the handles, then take a tape measure and run it next to them. Paying close attention to the measurements, use a black marker to establish each interval along the handle's side in a clearly visible manner. When you decide to work in the garden again, you will now have a ruler at your disposal.

If you have a wall or fence that you do not like, plant climbers to mask its appearance. These climbing plants will help beautify an old fence, and they are fast workers too. You can also use them in your landscape to cover an existing arbor, or allow them to climb up trees, or through shrubs. Some varieties of these plants will have to be tethered to some sort of support, but other varieties will be able to attach to the medium they are climbing. Some climbers that have proven to be reliable are honeysuckle, jasmine, wisteria, clematis, and climbing roses.

If you are considering planting a garden take the time to plan it out. That way, if you see your plants beginning to bud but can't recall what they are, you can refer back to your plan to refresh your memory. This is also a great way to keep track of all your plants.

Create your own garden from scratch with seeds, rather than plants. Starting with your own seeds is more environmentally friendly than buying plants from a nursery. Seeds eliminate the waste of plastic containers from nurseries which rarely get recycled. There are some nurseries, however, that send their plants out in organic potting materials.

When gardening, avoid the use of strong broad-spectrum pesticides. Broad-spectrum pesticides not only kill pests, but also "good" bugs like ground beetles that eat pests. Bugs that provide a benefit to your garden are more easily killed by these broad-spectrum pesticides, you may simply end up with a bigger pest problem. In the end, you may resort to using even more pesticides in order to erase the problem.

It only requires some research, lots of outside work, and a large amount of patience. All the work will be worthwhile, when you experience the satisfaction of a thriving garden established by your own effort.
